Is she a siren or a myth?
Scenario
Parthenope is a woman who bears the name of her city. In Greek mythology, Parthenope is the siren who committed suicide after failing to charm Odysseus.
In the film, Parthenope is the embodiment of the city of Naples
Her body was carried by the flood to where Castel dell’Ovo now stands, and because of this she gave its name to the city that later became Neapolis, Naples. WarmthWritten by Peter GregsonPerformed by Peter Gregson, Warren Zielinski, Magdalena Filipczak, Laurie Anderson, Ashok Klouda.
Loads of ribbons
Seductive packaging. Open it and there’s nothing inside.
Except a few worn old rags of Fellini memorabilia
In Amarcord, 8 e mezzo, La Dolce Vita, to name just three of his best, the maestro conjured up a structureless jumble of images like this and turned them into a series of cinematic masterpieces, but he was able to do this because his images were real from the start – they were real images, real scenes, real events, seared into his brain by the real processes of pain and grief and pleasure and wistfulness and joy and whatever: namely, the whole range of human emotions. Sorrentino seems to think this is a simple trick he can copy and use to achieve the same results.
There are no shortcuts
But that’s not how art works. In the future, I’m going to follow the advice of another contributor here and avoid this director at all costs.
