From the outset, The Madness makes no secret of the fact that it is not a television series, but rather a critique of contemporary American society, focusing in particular on the impact of right-wing extremism and media manipulation. While these themes are important, their portrayal often feels forced and didactic, leaving little room for subtlety or viewer interpretation. Despite Daniels’ strong performance, his and many of the other characters are often reduced to stereotypes that fit neatly into the show’s ideological framework. The lack of nuance makes it difficult to engage with the characters on a deeper level, as they are largely used to advance the show’s political agenda. The same people who find the show compelling, intelligent, and entertaining also consider CNN to be journalism.
